In a show of solidarity with Palestine, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh and Khilafat Majlis staged a massive protest in Dhaka on Friday, March 21, calling for justice over Israel`s violent military attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip.
The protest, which began immediately after the Jummah prayers, saw thousands of demonstrators chanting "Naraye Takbir" as they marched from the northern gate of Baitul Mukarram Mosque towards the Paltan intersection.
Security forces, including police and members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), were deployed in large numbers around the Baitul Mukarram area to maintain order.
The police had placed water cannons, armored personnel carriers (APCs), and prison vans at key points such as Paltan intersection and the mosque entrance.
BGB forces were also positioned at Nightingale intersection, while plainclothes officers and members of the Metropolitan Detective Police patrolled the area in jackets.
As protestors gathered in the mosque premises for Jummah prayers, law enforcement officials were seen searching bags to ensure security.
The security measures had been heightened in anticipation of the demonstration, as it had been publicly announced earlier by the Islamic groups.
According to on-site reports, the protest rally was part of a broader call by the two Islamic organizations—Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh and Khilafat Majlis.
These groups have been vocal in their condemnation of Israel`s ongoing military operations in Gaza, which have led to widespread destruction and numerous civilian casualties.
The protest saw significant participation from supporters of Islami Chhatra Shibir and Jamaat-e-Islami, who were also present in the mosque area during the demonstration.
The protesters demanded immediate action from international bodies to hold Israel accountable for its brutal actions, while urging the Bangladeshi government to take a stronger stance in support of the Palestinian cause.
